Stative verbs (for 10th form)

Stative verbs don't describe actions and that's why they are not normally used in continuous tenses.

Stative verbs often refer to

  • Emotions (love, like, hate, prefer, want, satisfy....)

  • Human senses (see, hear, smell, taste, sound.....)

  • Thinking (think, suppose, consider, believe, imagine, understand, know..)

  • Appearance ( seem, look, appear, resemble...)

  • Relationship between things (have, own, belong to, include, consist of..)

Some of these words can be used in Continuous tenses, but the meaning is changes.

I am smelling/tasting the milk to see if it is okay.

I see much better with my new glasses.

I am seeing Jack tomorrow. We are going to the cinema.
